What Makes a UI Simple? Difficulty and Complexity in Tasks Engaging Visual-Spatial Working Memory

چکیده

Tasks that imply engagement of visual-spatial working memory (VSWM) are common in interaction with two-dimensional graphical user interfaces. In our paper, we consider two groups factors as predictors performance such tasks: (1) the metrics based on compression algorithms (RLE and Deflate) plus Hick’s law, which known to be characteristic visual complexity, (2) Gestalt groping principle proximity, operationalized von Neumann Moore range 1 neighborhoods from cellular automata theory. We involved 88 subjects who performed about 5000 VSWM-engaging tasks 78 participants assessed complexity tasks’ configurations. found Gestalt-based had a notable advantage over complexity-based ones, memorized chunks best corresponded neighborhood groping. The latter was further used formulation index difficulty throughput for tasks, proposed by analogy infamous Fitts’ law. experimental study, amounted 3.75 bit/s, believe it can utilized comparing assessing UI designs.

The Effects of Spark Training on Visual-Spatial Working Memory Operation in Children with Mental Retardation

Introduction: Mental retarded children who receive a wide range of health services, representing more than two percent of the population. Mental retardation is associated with significant constraints on mental performance and adaptive behavior as well as perceptual and practical skills. According to the studies, one of the important tools that can affect cognitive abilities, such as memory, is ...

Traces of Intellectual Working Memory Tasks on Visual-Spatial Short-Term Memory

We measured the sensitivity in detecting a change in the location of one of two visual targets over a short period of time to investigate the impact of a secondary intellectual symbolic WM task on the visuospatial short-term memory, in a dual-task paradigm. We observed that engaging in a WM task that involves manipulation of symbolic information impacts the ability to detect a location change, ...

Microsaccades and Visual-Spatial Working Memory

The ability to remember and manipulate information is essential to human cognitive processes. Working memory (WM) is pervasive as a workspace for mental processes that make up momentary, explicit consciousness. Not only does the function of WM include simple temporary storage, or short-term memory (STM), but also more complex processes that manipulate and transform stored representations (Miyak...

Visual-spatial and verbal-spatial binding in working memory

The asymmetric pattern of binding of features in working memory is a controversial topic in the literature. The binding of visualspatial and verbal-spatial information was studied in a serial recognition task to address the contribution of spatial location, visual appearance, and verbal identity to binding in working memory. The participants (n = 32) made a recognition judgment of two sequences...

Parietal Contributions to Visual Working Memory Depend on Task Difficulty

The nature of parietal contributions to working memory (WM) remain poorly understood but of considerable interest. We previously reported that posterior parietal damage selectively impaired WM probed by recognition (Berryhill and Olson, 2008a). Recent studies provided support using a neuromodulatory technique, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the right parietal cortex (...
